こんにちは、皆さん！毎週月曜日はEnglishの日！今回は、私がオーストラリアで体験したクリスマスと、日本で一般的にイメージするクリスマスの違いについてお話しします。オーストラリアでは、クリスマスは夏の季節にあたるため、日本とは全く違った雰囲気があります。
皆さんは「クリスマス」と聞くと、どんなイメージが浮かびますか？多くの子どもたちは、厚着をしたサンタさんが雪の中を歩いている様子や、トナカイが雪の上を駆ける風景を思い浮かべることでしょう。日本のクリスマスは、寒さや雪といった冬のイメージが強いですよね。そして、町中にきらびやかな電飾が施されたクリスマスツリーが飾られて、まるでおとぎの国にいるかのような雰囲気になります。
ところが、オーストラリアでは、クリスマスがまさに「夏」の一部！オーストラリアの12月は、日本の6月と同じくらい暑い季節。だから、サンタさんも冬服ではなく、短パンとサンダルを履いている姿がよく見られます！家族や友達とビーチでバーベキューを楽しみながらクリスマスを祝うのが一般的です。みんな水着を着て、海で遊びながら、クリスマスのごちそうを楽しんでいます。
また、オーストラリアでは「クリスマスツリー」はもちろん飾りますが、雪は降らないので、ツリーの周りに雪を模した飾りはあまり見かけません。代わりに、ビーチサンダルやサーフボードの飾りをツリーに掛けることもあります。もちろん、サンタさんも海を飛び越えてくるという面白いイメージが広がります。
そして、オーストラリアのクリスマスには、冷たい食べ物が多いことが特徴です。例えば、バーベキューで肉を焼いたり、海老を食べたり、アイスクリームを楽しんだりします。温かい料理よりも、みんなが涼しく過ごせるような食べ物が中心です。クリスマスケーキは「プラザ・ケーキ」と呼ばれる特別なデザートがあり、みんなで切り分けて楽しみます。
オーストラリアでは、クリスマスが「暑い季節」にあるからこそ、どこか開放的で元気な雰囲気があります。家族や友達とアウトドアで楽しむクリスマスは、まさに夏の冒険のよう！どちらが好きかは、もちろん人それぞれですが、オーストラリアのクリスマスが持つ独特の楽しさもぜひ知ってもらいたいと思います。

Christmas in Australia vs Christmas in Japan
Hello, everyone! Today, I’d like to share the differences between Christmas in Australia and the typical Christmas that many children in Japan imagine. In Australia, Christmas falls during the summer, so the atmosphere is completely different from what we usually think of in Japan.
When Japanese children hear the word “Christmas,” what comes to mind? Many probably imagine Santa Claus bundled up in warm clothes, walking through the snow, and reindeer dashing across the snowy landscape. Christmas in Japan is strongly associated with cold weather, snow, and beautiful Christmas trees decorated with sparkling lights, creating a magical, fairy-tale-like atmosphere.
However, in Australia, Christmas is part of “summer!” December in Australia is just as hot as June in Japan, so instead of Santa in winter clothes, you might see him wearing shorts and sandals! It’s common for families and friends to celebrate Christmas with a barbecue on the beach. People are often in swimsuits, playing in the water, and enjoying delicious Christmas food in the sun.
Of course, Australians do decorate their Christmas trees, but because there’s no snow, you won’t see fake snow around the tree. Instead, decorations might include flip-flops and surfboards hanging on the tree. And there’s also a fun image of Santa flying over the ocean to deliver presents!
One more big difference is the food! In Australia, Christmas food is often cold, with lots of barbecued meat, shrimp, and ice cream. Instead of warm dishes, the focus is on cool, refreshing foods that everyone can enjoy while staying comfortable in the heat. For dessert, there’s a special cake called “Pavlova,” which everyone cuts and shares together.
Christmas in Australia has a very open, energetic atmosphere because it happens during the hot summer. Celebrating Christmas outdoors with family and friends is like an exciting summer adventure!
